Down vs Synthetic Jackets: How to Choose the Right One

If you’ve ever stood in front of a wall of puffy jackets wondering which one’s actually going to keep you warm, you’re not alone. “Should I get down or synthetic?” is one of the most common questions I get in-store. And honestly, it’s a good one – because both are great options, they just shine in different conditions.

Over the years, I’ve seen people pick jackets that are way too warm for their trips, or not warm enough, or completely wrong for the climate. I’ve done it myself. The truth is, once you know what each insulation does best, the choice becomes really simple.

The Short Answer

If you want the best warmth-to-weight ratio and you’re mostly hiking or travelling in cold, dry conditions, go down.

If you spend time in wet, humid, or unpredictable weather, go synthetic – it keeps you warm even when damp and dries much faster.

How Down Works

Down is a natural insulation made from the fluffy clusters found underneath duck or goose feathers. These clusters trap warm air incredibly efficiently, giving you lots of warmth for very little weight. That’s why a down jacket feels light but toasty.

It’s also extremely compressible. You can squash it down into a tiny stuff sack, which is great when you’re trying to pack light for a hiking trip or alpine adventure.

But down has one big weakness – moisture. When it gets wet, the clusters clump together and lose their loft. No loft means no trapped air, which means no warmth. Once soaked, a down jacket can take ages to dry – not ideal on a multi-day hike in unpredictable weather.

So while down is king in the cold, it’s not much use if it’s damp.

I learned this the hard way on a Tassie trip years ago. I packed my favourite down jacket thinking it’d be perfect for freezing mornings – but after a day of drizzle, it was heavy, clammy, and about as useful as a damp towel. Since then, I’ve saved down for the cold, dry stuff and gone synthetic for anything wet.

How Synthetic Works

Synthetic insulation is man-made, usually from fine polyester fibres designed to mimic down. It traps warm air the same way, but it keeps working when wet – which is its biggest advantage.

Even if your jacket gets soaked, synthetic fill won’t clump. It still traps air, dries faster, and gives you warmth when you need it most.

It’s also easier to care for. You don’t have to baby it, it’s machine washable, and it doesn’t mind a bit of abuse. If you’re rough on gear or just want something simple, synthetic is more forgiving.

The trade-off? It’s a bit heavier and bulkier than down for the same warmth. You won’t get the same “ultralight” feel, and over time, synthetic fibres can break down and lose loft.

But for most hikers, that’s a fair trade for reliability.

Warmth and Weight

This is where down really shines – warmth-to-weight. If you’re counting grams and chasing warmth, down’s unbeatable.

A lightweight down jacket can weigh under 400 grams and still keep you cosy at freezing temps. A synthetic jacket with similar warmth might weigh closer to 600 grams and pack twice as large.

So if you’re travelling light or tackling alpine conditions, that extra efficiency is worth it. But if you’re hiking in variable conditions – especially anywhere with mist, rain, or snow melt – synthetic gives you more consistent warmth, even if the weather turns.

The Fill Power Myth

A lot of people think that a higher fill power automatically means a warmer jacket. Not quite.

Fill power measures the quality of the down – how lofty it is – not how much down is inside.

The actual warmth comes from the amount of down multiplied by its fill power.

Warmth = Fill Power × Fill Weight

A 650FP jacket with 200 grams of down can be warmer than an 850FP jacket with only 100 grams.

So don’t just read the number on the sleeve. Look for both the fill power and the total down weight. If a brand doesn’t list the fill weight, that’s usually a red flag.

Durability and Care

A good down jacket can last a decade or more if you look after it. The key is storage and cleaning:

  • Store it uncompressed (don’t leave it stuffed in its sack)
  • Keep it dry
  • Wash it with a proper down wash when it starts to clump

Synthetic jackets don’t need as much fuss. You can machine wash them, they dry fast, and you don’t need to worry about loft maintenance. They won’t last as long as high-quality down, but for the average user, they’ll easily give you years of reliable warmth.

Cost and Value

Down costs more – especially high fill power down – because it’s a natural material that needs careful sourcing. Look for RDS-certified down if you care about animal welfare. These days, most legit outdoor brands are using RDS down, so it’s worth checking, but you’ll rarely find a reputable one that isn’t.

Synthetic jackets are generally cheaper, and many modern versions use recycled fibres, which is a nice sustainability bonus. And here’s the thing – synthetic insulation keeps improving. Every few years it gets a little lighter, warmer, and more compressible, slowly closing the gap on down. It’s still not quite as efficient gram-for-gram, but the difference is nowhere near what it used to be.

If you’re only buying one jacket, synthetic is often better value. If you’re building a kit over time, investing in a good down piece is worth it.

How to Choose

Here’s how I usually break it down for customers:

  • Cold and dry (alpine, snow trips, frosty mornings): Go down
  • Wet or humid (coastal, rainforest, Tassie): Go synthetic
  • High output activities (running, fast hiking): Go synthetic
  • Everyday use or travel: Down if you want lightweight packability, synthetic if you want durability

If you can afford both, that’s ideal – a lightweight down puffy for warmth and a synthetic jacket for everyday adventures.

Final Thoughts

There’s no single winner here – both down and synthetic have their place.

If you’re chasing the lightest, warmest jacket for alpine missions, down’s unbeatable.
If you’re after reliability, value, and peace of mind in wet weather, synthetic’s your best mate.
